It was just eleven days ago that McMinn Central was left without a head football coach when their now previous coach Derrick Davis stepped down to take a defensive assistant job at Rhea County. Davis was the Chargers head coach for the past two seasons in which he led the team to six wins and 14 losses. However, that was an improvement from where they had finished the two seasons prior to Davis entering the fold as they had gone a combined 1-19 before he arrived.
Now, to try and take yet another step with McMinn will be an offensive-minded man named Matt Moody who joins the program from Bradley Central where he served for eight seasons and three as the offensive coordinator.
Moody, a graduate of McMinn County in 2005 called this the chance of a lifetime and a goal he’s been working towards according to the Times Free Press, “My goal my entire life has been to have the chance to be a head coach. This is a really good opportunity to build a successful program, and I’m excited to get started.”
Obviously, it’s a little late in the game for Moody as the season is just months away and he’ll have some catching up to do… “The timing of it is the only bad thing. Just the fact that we’re already past spring practice and play in a couple of months, so there’s not as much time as you’d like to get in there and start working. But what I learned at Bradley is you build your program on having strong relationships, so that’s the most important thing for us to start doing.”
However, McMinn Athletic Director Brent Masingale is still confident in Moody and that they’ve found the right fit for what they’re looking for. “We wanted to make a move quickly because we were on a time crunch with the season so close, but we also wanted to make sure we found the right guy to lead the program, and luckily for us Coach Moody fit every criteria we were looking for. Besides his knowledge of the game and the weight room, he’s very energetic, so he will bring a lot of enthusiasm to the program.” (Again according to The Times Free Press)
Hopefully McMinn Central can continue to build up the program that has seen some down years of late, we’ll see what 2021 brings for coach Moody and staff.
