Coach Rusty Wright and staff began the process of constructing the 2022 Chattanooga Mocs roster with the opening of the early signing period.

CHATTANOOGA—Yesterday, the Chattanooga Mocs announced the first crop of All-Americans from 2021. Today is where future groups begin as Coach Rusty Wright and staff begins looking ahead with the first National Signing Day for the Class of 2022.

The first new Mocs joined as #BirdGang22 is beginning to be unveiled. This is just the start with updates coming in January (transfers) and February (traditional NSD). The first pieces come at linebacker and quarterback:

Alex Mitchell, ILB
6-1 | 225 | Murfreesboro, Tenn. | Riverdale
Alex’s defensive coordinator at RHS is former Mocs DE Zach Rayl…head coach Will Kriesky…led a defense that surrendered just 7.9 points per game in a 10-2 season…pitched five shutouts on those 12 games…also played tight end on offense…recorded 86 tackles with 2.5 sacks, three interceptions and one caused fumble…All-State, Region 4-6A Defensive MVP and Tennessee Mr. Football semifinalist.

Coach Wright quick take on Alex Mitchell: “Athletic, big strong athletic linebacker. Tennessee kid who played for Zach Rayl (former Moc DL) who is the DC there. .good tackler, very smart football player.”

Luke Schomburg, QB
6-3 | 190 | Huntsville, Ala. | Sparkman
Played for Laron White at Sparkman…14 TDs thrown in 2021 leading the Senators to the Class 7A playoffs…ran for the game-tying TD and threw the winning to send SHS to the playoffs in 28-21 win over Huntsville…multiple TDs thrown in four games with a high three against Gardendale and Grissom…season-high 284 yards against Gardendale…15.4 yards per completion…also played baseball.

Coach Wright quick take on Luke Schomburg: “Long, athletic young man who’s going to continue growing and have a bright future.”

Nate White, OLB
6-3 | 230 | Orlando, Fla. | Edgewater/FIU/Copiah-Lincoln CC
Nate began his career at FIU passing on offers from USF, UConn, FAU & Akron…3-star per 247Sports ranked as the 113th-best DE in his class…began playing football at the age of 15 and recorded 49 career sacks at Edgewater playing for Cameron Duke…team went 21-5 his last two seasons reaching the state semis as a senior…played in four games at FIU redshirting 2019 with a career-best two tackles against Tulane in the 2019 season opener…recorded 25 tackles in nine games as a defensive end at Copiah-Lincoln with 6.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks…coached by Glenn Davis.

Coach Wright quick take on Nate White: “Athletic, long, he played some FBS football and then had to go get it figured out again. He’s in that same mold as those guys being long and athletic.”
