Week 1 Waiver Wire Tuesday-Don’t Panic

Welcome to another glorious season of fantasy football.

One of, if not the most important aspect of winning a fantasy football championship, working the weekly waiver wire within your league to scoop up players to help sustain you through the cold injury/bye weeks that lurk ahead.

Last weekend was week one and I hope you were successful but there were a couple of injuries that we’ll need to address like, Cowboys QB Dak Prescot, Chargers WR Keenan Allen, Bucs WR Chris Godwin, and SF RB Elijah Mitchell just to name a few.

Another thing to note, please don’t drop your potential young studs if they didn’t explode in week one, trust the process and their talent.

So, with that let’s take a look at who you may want to consider adding to your roster this week and as always we won’t even consider anyone who’s rostered in 50% or more of ESPN Leagues (unless I choose to pick someone over 50% then it’s totally okay)

Quarterbacks

Matt Ryan, IND at JAX (24% Rostered)

Matty Ice may have struggled for most of that opening game in Houston but he turned it on late connecting time and again with his No. 1 target Michael Pittman Jr. in what turned out to be a furious comeback that resulted in a tie… Now, he had 352 yards passing, one TD, and one pick but it could have easily been two touchdown throws if it weren’t for an Alec Pierce drop, and his 16-point fantasy day could have looked a bit different. I know he’s getting up there in age but ever since 2016 he’s averaged a shade over 18 fantasy points per contest which should be good enough to get you by if you suffered a Dak Prescot injury last week. Oh yeah, and Carson Wentz just torched the Jags defense for 4 scores, enjoy.

Carson Wentz, WSH at DET (17% Rostered)

It was almost a terrible Commanders debut for Wentz last weekend but then he found Jahan Dotson for a 24-yard score to put Washington ahead for good and everything was good in the Nation’s Capital. Altogether he racked up nearly 28 fantasy points and with the questionable Detroit Lions secondary up next this may be the time for all of us to sort of believe in Carson Wentz again if that’s possible…

Running Backs

Jamaal Williams, DET vs. WSH (35% Rostered)

You had to know coming into this season that D’Andre Swift wasn’t going to be the sole running back to get meaningful playing time in Detroit and that the talented backup Jamaal Williams would be a thing to a certain degree and he certainly was in week one. Swift out-carried Williams 15-11 but Williams scored twice to Swift’s one on the ground. As long as Swift is healthy Williams should be viewed as a flex option as he won’t put up this type of production week in and week out so temper your expectations (it’s a little disappointing that he didn’t save this type of performance for a bye week).

Khalil Herbert, CHI at GB (25% Rostered)

Who’s a better fit for the Chicago Bears offense, David Montgomery or Khalil Herbert? This offseason there was a lot of buzz surrounding the young back but many fantasy owners still put their faith in Montgomery but this seems like it might be a bit of a duo situation in the Bears backfield than most were anticipating. During week one, DM out-carried KH 17-9 but Herbert averaged five yards per carry, whereas Montgomery averaged just one and a half. He’ll be a thing all season long and if his teammate were to miss any time he’ll get a much bigger opportunity.

Wide Receivers

Julio Jones, TB at NO (43% Rostered)

Never did I ever think I would be typing Julio Jones’ name on a waiver-wire piece I’d write but here we are in 2022 with the newest Tampa Bay Bucs WR (weird to say that as well). Chris Godwin is dealing with a hamstring injury and Julio is Julio so if he’s healthy, which he looked like he was, I wouldn’t walk I’d RUN to go pick him up.

Corey Davis, NYJ at CLE (3% Rostered)

The New York Jets are an odd team to figure out with so much hype surrounding their younger wide-outs like Elijah Moore and Garrett Wilson everyone seemed to forget about the former Tennessee Titans’ first-round pick Corey Davis and they also don’t have their young QB Zach Wilson so things may change when he gets back but for now, it’s the Joe Flacco show. With it being the aforementioned Flacco show, Davis shined as New York’s leading receiver catching six balls for 77 yards and while he won’t be a dynamo he has a chance to be a solid flex option for you moving forward this season.

Tight End

Albert Okwuegbunam, DEN vs. HOU (23% Rostered)

Without Noah Fant, in the fold, Albert Okwuegbunam has taken over the role of lead tight end and he did alright in game one with new QB Russell Wilson as he was targeted six times, and made five catches for 33 yards. The 24-year-old is 6-5 260lbs, I have faith he’ll be a nice target for Russ and the Broncos all season long if you’re not happy with the TE you drafted.
