I’ve done very little writing on our website over the years. But as we strive to provide you good people with more and more digital content, here it goes. For golf fans, especially golf fans in the South, this week is special because it’s time for The Masters. So, naturally the focus of this piece will be on golf’s most-prestigious event. Well, sort of.
Those of you who listen to Press Row regularly know that I’m not the biggest fan of watching the game of golf on TV. I’m the guy that finds himself in front of a TV set whenever a major is unfolding, but I’m also the guy that’s going to chose the pool or a day out on the Tennessee River over watching the John Deere Classic. Plain and simple, the PGA Tour is not appointment television for me unless it’s a major. That’s changing, but it’s been a slow drip. Molasses slow.
One aspect I do love about golf, specifically majors, is gambling. Golf is high on the list of my favorite sports to place a wager on. It’s up on the totem pole with college football and basketball and the NFL.
Regardless of the sport, hearing about a gambler’s bets and following along with them as if they were my own is something I’ve always enjoyed. Hopefully, you do too because I’m about to share all of the bets I made on The Masters. Since all of my bets are “to-win” bets, it’s only possible for one of my bets to hit. I might get one and I might not. But hey, either way, I hope you enjoy following along with them over the weekend and possibly into Monday if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate.
By the way, I work in radio, so don’t bust my balls about the dollar amount I laid down on each golfer. For me, it’s about the action, not the money, and that’s the way it should be. Enjoy.
Bryson Dechambeau +650 ($10 to-win $65)
This is a “live bet” I made this morning to hedge my other bets after the second round of the tournament had already started.
Rickie Folwler +1700 ($10 to-win $170)
I’m a younger guy, 30 to be exact, so naturally I’m a fan of Fowler. I love his marketability and the swag he brings to the game, but it’s time for him to win a major. Go, Rickie!
Francesco Molinari +2100 ($10 to-win $210)
This Italian can play the game. He won The Open last year and that’s all I know.
Brooks Koepka +2100 ($20 to-win $420)
Popular pick here. He’s going for his fourth major win and his first at Augusta. Loved the odds.
Xander Schauffele +3500 ($10 to-win $350)
Stupid Jay Greeson told me to pick this guy. Hey, he sounds like someone who should contend at The Masters, right?
Tony Finau +3500 ($10 to-win $350)
Last year he dislocated his ankle at the Par-3 Contest. Who doesn’t love a good comeback story, right? And finally…
Keith Mitchell +10000 ($10 to-win $1,000)
I had to put some loot on the guy with the Chattanooga connection. Keith struggled late on Friday, but whatever.
