University of Alabama strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran is expected to join Kirby Smart’s staff at the University of Georgia in an on-field role.
Cochran has been at Alabama since the 2007 season, which was year one of the Saban era in Tuscaloosa. He has been a huge reason for Alabama’s success during Saban’s tenure, running the Tide’s “Fourth Quarter Program” and working closely with players throughout the season. Cochran received the Samson Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year during the 2008 and 2011 seasons.
Before joining the Alabama staff, Scott Cochran served as the assistant strength coach for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets from 2004 to 2006. He also served on LSU’s strength staff in 2003 while Saban was the head coach of the Tigers. Scott Cochran has been on Saban’s staff for all six of his national championships.
Scott Cochran will fill Georgia’s vacancy for an on-field coach. He will be head coach Kirby Smart’s special teams coordinator, barring any unforeseen changes. That job came open last month when former special teams coach Scott Fountain joined former offensive line coach Sam Pittman’s staff at Arkansas. The Bulldogs hired Todd Monken as the offensive coordinator to put the on-field staff number at ten, but a spot opened up soon after when James Coley left to become the tight ends coach at Texas A&M.
Cochran’s addition will result in Todd Monken coaching the quarterbacks while handling the offensive play-calling. The rest of the staff will remain as it was during Georgia’s Sugar Bowl win over Baylor in January.
