LSU quarterback Joe Burrow became just the second Tiger to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy (Billy Cannon, 1959), awarded to college football’s best player.
The signal-caller won in a landslide vote, receiving 2,608 points and 841 first-place votes. His margin of victory (1,846 points) broke O.J. Simpson’s record (1,750 points) when he won the award for USC in 1968. Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts finished second, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields finished third, and his teammate, OSU defensive end Chase Young finished fourth.
Burrow threw for 48 touchdowns and 4,715 yards in 2019, which are SEC single-season records. He led the Tigers to a undefeated regular season and an SEC championship crown. He will add the Heisman Trophy to an impressive collection of trophies. Burrow won the Maxwell Award (best overall player), Davey O’Brien Award (best quarterback) and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award on Thursday night at the College Football Awards.
Joe Burrow and his No. 1 LSU Tigers will play No. 4 Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff Semifinal on Saturday, December 28 at 4:00 p.m. ET.
